The White House hit back at a Virginia Democratic congressman for his harsh critique on the first days of President Donald Trump’s second term.
In 2019, during Trump’s first term, Rep. Eugene Vindman rose to notoriety as a whistleblower, along with his twin brother, Alexander. At the time, the future congressman served as a legal adviser to the National Security Council. He claimed the president allegedly “attempt[ed] to extort Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden,” ultimately leading to the president’s first impeachment.
During an appearance on MSNBC, Vindman touted the American dream by drawing from his own experience coming to the U.S. as a child as a Ukrainian refugee, comparing it to Trump’s second term.
“We’re seeing such a rapid retreat in these first 45 days, like I said it’s an abomination. I’m hard pressed to think of a worse 45 days, self-inflicted by any administration in this country’s history,” the congressman remarked.
The White House issued a response in the form of a formal statement in a harsh rebuke of Vindman’s comments.
“Today, disgraced Rep. Eugene Vindman said he is ‘hard pressed to think of a worse 45 days’ in American history than the first six weeks of President Donald J. Trump’s second term…What a stupid, moronic statement,” the White House wrote.
“According to Vindman, there is nothing ‘worse’ than record low illegal border crossings, getting killers and rapists off the streets, freeing American hostages, protecting women and girls, securing ‘$3 trillion in investments and trade commitments,’ saving taxpayers billions of dollars in wasteful spending, pursuing world peace, and capturing terrorists,” the statement continued. “Vindman has a terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome — and it shows.”
