Americans are split on the impact of tariffs, with 21% saying they help the economy, 38% saying they hurt and 34% saying the impact of tariffs vary, according to a new poll.
Overton Insights asked 1,200 registered voters about tariffs between March 24 and 28 in a poll set to be released on Monday.
U.S. markets took their steepest dive Thursday since the pandemic hit in March 2020 as investors worry about how the U.S. economy will handle President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs.
The poll asked if those voters believed the tariffs will help or hurt the American economy with an option that the result depends on if the tariffs are targeted and temporary, such as protecting a key industry under threat. Broad and long-term tariffs, however, may increase costs and create trade conflicts.
The voters were also asked their political party, ideology and who they voted for in the 2024 presidential election.
Of those who voted for Trump, 37% said that tariffs help the economy, 15% say that they hurt, 38% say it depends and 10% said they were unsure of the impact.
Of those who voted for Kamala Harris, 4% said they believe tariffs help the economy, 66% said they believe tariffs hurt, 27% say it depends and 3% were not sure.
