Americans are most supportive of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown but are more skeptical of his trade and tariffs plan, according to a new poll.
The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released Monday reports that 49% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of immigration and 46% approve of his government spending cuts, but only 40% and 38% respectively favor his work on the economy and trade.
Overall, Trump’s approval rating has hovered around 50% with some polls coming in over or under the middle point.
Illegal immigration has plummeted since Trump took office, but Trump faces legal challenges to his efforts to deport certain alleged gang members to a prison in El Salvador.
A slew of Trump’s tariffs are set to take effect on Wednesday, April 2, which Trump has called “Liberation Day.” Trump has called for reciprocal tariffs that would place tariffs on other countries to the same degree that they tariff the U.S.
He has also placed 20% tariffs on China and 25% on Canada and Mexico, though many of the North American trading partners’ goods are excluded under the USMCA trade agreement.
Trump has urged Mexico and Canada to help beef up their border enforcement to help stop the flow of illegal immigration into the U.S.
