At a House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee hearing, Rep. Linda Sánchez, D-Calif., pushed back against the idea that foreign nations are the only ones that feel the weight of tariffs, arguing that American families pay the price in end.
“Let’s set the record straight—American families pay for tariffs in the form of higher costs for goods and services,” Sánchez said.
Sánchez criticized Trump’s approach to trade policy, arguing that tariffs should not be the end all be all for addressing foreign policy disputes. She also questioned the administration’s lack of funding for trade enforcement and worker protections, despite its aggressive tariff policies.
“If we care about workers displaced by trade, where is the funding for Trade Adjustment Assistance?” she asked. “Or are these tariffs just an excuse to fund new tax cuts for the Elon Musks of the world?”
